The only one of those that interested me was writing a story pitch idea based on all those silly prompts. I'm going to make it a little more fun for myself by mixing in some pop culture references. See if you can figure out what they are. So let's get to it.
The Light Fantastic
For centuries the Star of Zinthar provided the people of Thunderra with unlimited energy. But then the star disappeared, plunging people into darkness. That is until a boy named Orco and his mother find a pear giving off mysterious light in a stream beneath an old bridge. Before they can determine what it is, Orco's mother is killed by an agent of Cobra, the brutal secret police of the government. Now in order to return the power of the star to the people, Orco must join forces with the scavengers in the wastelands and find a way to defeat Cobra.
Hooray, according to Word that's 100 words exactly! And we make sometimes vague references to the people at the old bridge, the kid running, the pear, the kids scavenging, and the starburst thingy.
My less complicated idea for a challenge was simply to write a 30-second commercial for your current (or former) WIP. I did something like that on my old blog. This is a movie trailer for A Hero's Journey, my someday-to-be-published novel.
#
- Opening: scene from the flashback where Emma is 8 years old in the car with her parents. Bright light and then CRUNCH! they're hit by another car.
- Then we do a cut with a second of black and a burst of Hans Zimmer-like score.
- After that a few seconds from near the end of the flashback where Emma sees her mom lying facedown on the street in a pool of blood.
- Do another cut to the front of the Plaine Museum of Natural History
- Closer-up we have 19-year-old Emma with her new boss Ian, who says something welcoming her
- Then another cut to where Emma is in her lab and her future boyfriend Dan Dreyfus shows up with the evil black crate that looks like that thing in 2001.
- Another cut to inside the museum during the fancy charity gala when there's an explosion.
- Another quick cut to when Emma is at the top of the steps to the third floor and sees the outline of the evil Black Dragoon.
- Then we cut to when Emma is in the hospital and is visited by her mother's ghost telling her to find the armor.
- Another cut to inside the Sanctuary beneath the museum, where Emma is opening the red crate for the magic armor. As she opens the crate and holds up the helmet, Marlin the ghost tells her something about what it is.
- Then we cut to Emma all dressed up in the armor and maybe like holding up the golden Sword of Justice. Close in on her face as she says something like, "Let's do it."
- Now we need a big final montage with dramatic music and action shots of Emma fighting the Black Dragoon.
- Then it should end with the Sword of Justice flying towards the screen and the title: A Hero's Journey--in 3D! (Because everything has to be in 3D)
- Throw in the final cards for credits/rating and the release date and we're done!
- Now tell me if I did that right you wouldn't go see that movie. Of course you would! Unless you hate superhero movies, in which case you probably wouldn't no matter what I did.
That was pretty neat, wasn't it? It would make a kick-ass book trailer if you had decent production values.
You've got the book trailer already mapped out. Damn. That's detail.
ReplyDeleteI caught references to Thundarr the barbarian and GI Joe in there, but I'm sure there are tons I missed.
And knowing is half the battle.
ReplyDeleteCOOOOOBRAAAAAA completely s[insert hissing]tuck out--I recognized that before anything else. For some reason, I usually find references like these pretty funny...
ReplyDeleteThe movie teasers I can sometimes create are nowhere near as thought-out as that; your book sounds exciting. The ones I come up with are often obscure and cut off before much of anything is revealed.
I'm glad you at least like this challenge better.
ReplyDeleteI did get the GI Joe but was unsure other than that. That would be a good book trailer.
ReplyDeleteCool twist with the commercials. :D
ReplyDeleteThis challenge is way more complicated, but I liked it better cuz it made me think. Though I think a trailer one would be cool too.
ReplyDeleteNice pitch!
ReplyDeleteSo Mecha Streisand joined Thundarr to fight Cobra? Brilliant! I loved it.
ReplyDeleteKevin, (#19)
Liked the pitch!
